Our Goal & Objective

Goal

To promote a city beautiful movement that will encourage practices and design features that will make a Galena a more appealing place for economic development, investment, living and tourism.
 

Objective

Promote roadway and street designs that are in harmony with surrounding land use, improve aesthetic appeal and improve safety for all roadway users.

 

Priority

Work with the Illinois Department of Transportation – District 2, the City of Galena and Jo Daviess County to promote context sensitive solutions for the imminent U.S. Route 20 improvements in Galena. Review the plans and determine how the following design features could be included or improved:

• Bury the overhead wires

• Trees

• Historic lighting

• Landscaping

• Historic Signage

• Roadway materials that are congruent with setting

Priority

• Work to bury the AT&T overhead wires that block the views of Galena for westbound traffic along US Route 20 at Horseshoe Mound and Gateway Park.
 

Priority

• Promote the development of access management and land use plans for the U.S Route 20 approaches to Galena.
 

Priority

• Encourage the development of streetscape plans for prominent streets such as Main Street, Franklin Street, and Dewey Street.
 

Objective

Promote the historic buildings, features and structures throughout Galena.
 

Priority

Develop and promote Light Up Galena! - A plan for urban lighting.

• Promote the restoration of historic landmarks

• Put the dome back on the County Building

• Restore the interior of the County Building

• Prepare an annual list of top 10 historic buildings most in need of protection and restoration

Promote and draw attention to the historic architectural and planning professionals who contributed to making Galena a beautiful city.

Seek designation for Main Street as a great street from the American Planning Association.

Objective

Encourage the development of a land use plan for east side of downtown from Main Street to the Galena River levee

Develop a land use plan that will promote development through thoughtful land use practices and the development of public spaces that will encourage people to want to congregate in this area.

• Promote a parking plan for downtown Galena that will increase the amount and efficiency of parking while providing more space for development.
