A Celebration with Refreshements for Volunteers at The Chicago Athenaeum.

GALENA, ILLINOIS (APRIL 7, 2022) —For Arbor Day, Saturday, April, 30, The Galena City Beautiful, together with The Chicago Athenaeum at Galena, is organizing Galena Arbor Day to improve existing tree-lined sections along U.S. Highway 20 by planting beautiful trees and adding beautiful flowers.

Galena City Beautiful is an organization of planners, experts and volunteers, architects, artists, business professionals, as well as residents and general public working together to create a more beautiful and harmonious city environment for local inhabitants and visitors to our historic city.

One of the goals of Galena City Beautiful is to encourage green spaces, city parks, and roadway connections to the natural rural geography of the historic district.

This Arbor Day, volunteers will plant trees and flowers donated by local businesses to green and beautify sections of U.S. Highway 20 and other areas.

“Arbor Day is a great American tradition,” states Kieran Conlon, Executive Director, The Chicago Athenaeum. "Planting trees and flowers can make the City of Galena even more beautiful, increasing the enjoyment of our city for both local residents and the many tourists who visit every year.”

"Historically, many of Galena's city streets were lined with trees. This Arbor Day events is an opportunity to revive the tradition of tree-lined streets, creating a tree canopy along the city's entrance from the west, and hopefully, in time, from the east, which can only make a positive impression on visitors and those passing through."

“We encourage city residents and volunteers to get involved in this Arbor Day event. It will be fun and it will add a sense of civic pride and distinction to our local community,” continues Conlon.

The Arbor Day plantings will begin around 12 Noon on Saturday, April 30 meeting at The Chicago Athenaeum at 11:30 AM.

After the plantings, there will be a community celebration at The Chicago Athenaeum with refreshments for volunteers.
