GALENA, ILLINOIS (APRIL 3, 2022) —On Sunday, Rex Ball was presented with a $3,000 Scholarship at The Chicago Athenaeum in Galena by Jess Clyde and Ben Burke, co-Chairs of Galena City Beautiful.
“Rex, a third-year student at East Dubuque High School, will intern at the Museum working on historical research, preservation, and other Galena City Beautiful projects and initiatives,” states Jess Clyde.
“Rex was also presented with the book Landmark Galena: Architecture and the Historic City—the most comprehensive study on the architecture and history of Galena, which is published by The Chicago Athenaeum,” adds Ben Burke.
Over the years, Galena City Beautiful and The Chicago Athenaeum have awarded grants and funds to students and to not-for-profit organizations for the development of architecture and the arts, promoting history, poetry and literature, and awarding internships where students can learn hands on experience on how museums operate in the areas of public education and the preservation of historical materials and the values of positive civic and cultural outreach.
“Our institution believes in the power of design to positively impact our world, solving problems, transforming lives, and creating a better world,” states Kieran Conlon, Executive Director of The Chicago Athenaeum.
“We believe the irrepressible spirit of architecture and design can be harnessed to support and empower a nextgeneration design community.”
“Galena City Beautiful also believes in the power of historic preservation to not only teach the legacy of the past to future generations, but to ensure that places with meaning remain relevant in our lives today,” adds Conlon. “We use the historic, but still thriving City of Galena to bring this belief to life, through exhibitions and partnerships that demonstrate the value that architecture and design can have meaningful impact on contemporary culture.”
Every year, Galena City Beautiful awards thousands of dollars in architecture scholarships and
professional development grants to high school and undergraduate students as well as youth in our community.
Internships are awarded annually to students who demonstrate a strong interest in architecture and the rich history of Galena and in learning to become a better civic leader in the future.
